Open the Transcript tab during a call and text appears a moment behind the speech. Before anyone talks it reads Waiting for speech....
Your own words are always labelled You. Everyone else arrives as Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on until you name them.
Naming a speaker
- Click a speaker's label.
- Type a name, or pick one from Existing speakers or Attendees.
- Choose how far it applies: This speech block, or All instances.
Picking a name that already exists merges the two, which is how you fix Junior
splitting one person into two speakers. ⌘Z undoes a rename.
The status line
The panel header tells you what the transcript is doing:

None of these affect the recording. Audio keeps being captured to your computer whatever the transcript is doing, and the final transcript is produced afterwards from that audio.

Questions
The live transcript got a name or a word wrong. Do I need to fix it?
Not for accuracy's sake. The final transcript is produced again after the call with the whole recording available, and corrects most of this on its own. See live transcript versus the final transcript. Naming speakers is still worth doing live, because that is a label Junior cannot infer.
I named a speaker wrongly. Can I clear the name?
You can rename them to something else, but you cannot return them to an unnamed Speaker 2. There is no way to blank a name once one has been set. Rename to the correct person instead.
One person is showing up as two different speakers.
Common on calls with variable audio. Click the second one's label and pick the first one's name from Existing speakers. That merges them. Choose All instances so it applies across the whole call rather than one block.
Why is everyone on the far end sometimes labelled the same?
Because they arrive on one channel. Junior hears you through your microphone and everyone else through your speakers, as a single mixed feed, then separates voices within it. Distinguishing four people on one channel is harder than distinguishing you from them, so a busy call may need more naming.
